...please don't bother waiting up.

Wow. It's only been a little over two months this time. I'm getting better!
WOW! New Miesha set! What great timing I have! I loves the Miesha greatly!

Jesus...where to start?

The comic(The Path, for those of you with an attention span as short as mine) has been selling REALLY well. On-line, at conventions, in the stores that are already carrying it. It's been pretty awesome. I haven't really had time to slow down and breathe yet. I've been to about 10 conventions already since the last time I posted. That doesn't sound like a lot, but trust me. It is. There are at least 6 more to go until the con-season ends. I'm not complaining, though. Each one I go to, more and more people are recognizing me and the comic. More and more people are coming to the panels I do. More and more people are giving me MONEYS. Which, yeah...artistic integrity and all that...but money is nice, too. Money keeps me fed and my apartment from going away. Even better than con-goers and internets people giving me money is that Diamond Distribution is picking up the comic, too. Which means that in a few months, it'll be in stores nation-wide! All part of the plan.

I don't know if I mentioned this here yet, but we were approached by both a Dreamworks rep and an ADV rep about doing something animated with The Path. I had "meet-and-greet" meetings with both, and they're actually genuinely interested. I've been working on storyboards and animatics to use for the full pitches (thank the gods for that animation internship I did a few years ago). Through my own connections and footwork, I got "8 Simple Rules" star Amy Davidson to do the voicework for the female lead, Kat. We're aiming high on Chance: trying to get Kurt Russell (who the character is based on) to buckle and say yes. Our main weapon? Videos from readers begging Kurt to do the part. I've got about 250 videos so far. Feel free to contribute! The more help, the better! Our secondary weapon? Investors. I've actually managed to line up a few. Also, if anybody knows a band looking for exposure, we're about to start an open-call "audition" for theme songs. Right now I'm eyeing "The Darkest of Hillside Thickets", because their music is 95% Lovecraft-themed, but I've already gotten a few tracks from other bands. So if you know any bands that would be interested, give them my email: jriot@olddyingkitty.com.

There's more I should be posting about. Like, personal life and all that...but this HAS been my life since last time. I'm hoping to one day aquire normal sleeping habits, too. I certainly won't stop drinking excessively. That would be silly.
<itunes:summary>Yep. It's time for my semi-annually check in! Has it really been since November? Goddamn, I'm useless around here now.

I started out the new year with a car accident and my apartment being broken into. I'm still in the process of replacing everything of merit that was stolen. Of course, I didn't have renters insurance. I do NOW, though. The worst part was that they got ALL my computer equipment, even my external hard drives...so I've been at the agonizingly slow task of re-doing several years' worth of artwork, and trying to keep clients from going somewhere else while I redid all their work. Woo. But it's cool, I'm the Goddamn Riot. I prevailed.

In about 10 days I head back to New York for the New York COmic Con, and the big "debut" of my comic, The Path. Yeah, I've been spouting crap about this comic for almost two years now, and was even self-publishing it, but now a real studio is footing the bill. So now I get to go back to just worrying about the comic itself and leave all the business end crap of it to someone else. This is a concept I enjoy. Especially since Dreamworks is interested in the book. That's right. Dreamworks. I've been stalked by them at about three conventions now, and at the last one they invited me to a pitch meeting. They like all my mental-instability-induced ideas and The Path is going to be coming to the little screen (DVD) in the next few years. Once we finish hashing it out over some of the more disturbing aspects of the story that I don't want to tone down.

It looks like I'm done with Platinum Studios. It's a shame, because I had fun working for those guys...but the way the new regime there is shaping up, it's not a good place to be. There's still about 8 months on my contract with them, so it's kind of super-happy lawyer time to get out of it. I'm letting the lawyers hash that part out. I don't really care if I wind up losing money in the deal, I just don't want to work for them anymore. They've been treating creators like crap, their employees even worse, and...while that hasn't trickled down to me yet...I want out before it does. Plus, their VP of Digital Publishing works for me now as Marketing Director anyways. So i really have no use for the place. As cold as it sounds I'm on to bigger and better things.

The site looks great. There are so many new girls, all of them so beautiful, I don't even know where to start. Same thing with journals and messages. There are about 4,000 to start sifting through. It's gonna take a while.

That's it for now. I'll leave you with a comic about when my friend Chris made me go to one of those speed-dating things. For some reason, my friends can't stand the fact that I'm single. You know the drill: click it so you get full-sized, not screwed-up clean-ness.
God.

So, I just got back (and by "just" I mean "four days ago") from Wizard World Texas. There are few things in life I enjoy more than being at comic conventions, because I get to live like a rockstar for four days. Nice hotel, good food, women, people asking me to sign shit...yeah. I could get used to that.

The added bonus was that my table did, like, a thousand times more business than the studio poster-boy's table. A fact which made him hate me more than he already does. His hatred sustains me, mainly because it means that I'm still doing this whole comics-thing right. Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies) liked my comic and helped my table get a TON of extra business, cute girls kept coming by for sketches, and we got told that we're pretty much REQUIRED to be at every Wizard World convention next year.

On the flip-side, I've been on two dates in recent times...both of which ended in disaster. The first one was a blind date, and the girl "next"ed me. Which I probably would've been mad about if I didn't find it so damned funny. The second ended when, half way through dinner, she began a tirade about how "...we're doing the LORD'S work over in Iraq...". I'm not sure WHY I keep trying the dating thing. Women in CA are at least 23% crazier than women everywhere else. This can be proven through imaginary mathematics. Trust me.

Still waiting on the final proofs for the coloring book from the printers. Soon as I know, you gals will. After Christmas I'm planning to get cracking on volume 2 of it...seeing as how we've got a LOT more lovely ladies around here.

That's it for now. I realize my portfolio on here is woefully blank. I should do something about that. Until then, go check out my on-line studio.

I'm going to go off like this: Oh, monkey hands....and frozen legs...
-Riot!</itunes:summary>

...because I'm posting TWICE in one month. My.

I'm going to go off like this: Oh, monkey hands....and frozen legs...

...because I'm posting TWICE in one month. My.

ANYWAY...it's time for my once-in-a-god-damned-blue-moon update!

I broke my drawing hand and spent almost three months in a cast. That drove me fucking insane. I tried drawing WITH the cast on, but it came out looking like the deranged scribblings of a retarded monkey.

      <itunes:summary>
So what has it been this time? Three months? Four? They all kind of blur together when you don't sleep. I find myself talking like Grimlock from Transformers quite a bit these days.

My life these days is pretty much just comics. More so than it was before. The Path, and my superhero comic, Jetgirl both got picked up by studios for publication. So I've been working a lot on those. The Path may actually become a movie! Which is pretty freaking sick. Thanks to some friends in high places, the idea got pitched to studios like Revolution and Dreamworks...and there were some bites. So I'm doing story treatments, storyboards, designs...shit like that. Writer Jerry Ahern tracked me down to do the art and assist in storytelling duties for "Still The Greatest American Hero", the continuing story of highschool teacher Ralph Hinkley and his super-suit...and another comic called "Rise and Fall of the Argonauts". I have a meeting with Lilo and Stitch co-creator, Jason Wolf, to get started on a 60-page comic adaption of a movie he has in the works. The Drunk Duck Civil War, a spoof on Marvel Comics' Civil War event (started by myself and my buddy Zac)has become...well...we're pretty sure it's the biggest community event in webcomics ever (500+ steady participants, encompassing more than 250 webcomics...250 webcoics that I have to read, mind you). On top of all that, I'm working on crossovers with other creators, commissions, and pretty much living at comic book/anime conventions this year. Life is good. Busier than fuck, but good.

I went back to school, too. Working on getting my graphic design degree finsihed up.

The new Bad Religion album (got a copy a few weeks ago) is fucking AWESOME. That is all I will hear on the subject. Any who feel otherwise, please shoot yourself in the face and save me the trouble.

That's about it. This has, pretty much, led to no personal life to speak of...but I still manage to get myself trashed at least once a week, Saw Transformers...*sigh*. I know everyone in the world is saying how awesome it was...but it was a typical Bay movie: just bigger. All flash, no substance. And, with 20+ years of Transformers mythos to pull from, there was plenty of substance to be put in. This is what happens when you put a really shitty director, with absolutely no respect for the source material, in charge of a project. And it is on RECORD that he has no respect for the source material. He's said it himself. It was an ok movie. It could've been great.

That's about it. How's everyone doing here? I see I missed a bunch of sets. I'll have to catch up on those...not to mention messages and a billion journal entries.

Damn you, internet, and your endless reading materials!

Catch you hip cats and kittens later.

Go there. Watch the trailers for the new TMNT movie.

This is going to be totally tubular.

In other news, the first issue of The Path (http://www.drunkduck.com/the_path) should be hitting shelves around the end of february. I'm going to be about as broke as broke can be running the convention gauntlet to promote it, so buy a copy. Please. Think of the CHILDREN...

STOP the slutty cosplaying! I'm sorry. This might be callous and mean (even for me), but I'm telling you this for your own good. Look at an actual picture of the character you're about to cosplay. Does your body even REMOTELY resemble this character? No? Then perhaps walking around in a garter belt, spandex, and thigh-highs where other people (other people who, presumably, would like to keep their pocky down) can see you might be a bad idea.

6. Guys. Please read #5. I shouldn't even have to SAY this to you...but, apparently, some of you feel the need to run around conventions in women's underwear...and nothing else. You don't).

7. Fat lesbian chick and her ugly thin girlfriend dressed up as Innuyasha and Kagaome from last year's Otakon(seriously, these two needed to be fed to Star Jones). Now, I like me some anime. I like me some manga. I even like me some hentai (ok, I like me LOTS of hentai)....BUT COME THE FUCK ON, PEOPLE!!!

Am I the ONLY one who's getting sick to fuck of it being EVERYWHERE?!? I can't even go to the john without some anime character staring at me from the damn toilet paper roll! I go into my local comic book shop and it's EVERYWHERE. I can't even by my damn comics without someone trying to explain to me that Innuyasha is the greatest love story ever told(I'm not even joking...that happened yesterday).

That being said, I'm looking foward to Otakon this summer, because it's turning into the only time of year I get with some of my closest friends. The drive there and back is usually most of the fun. Though, last year I noticed a distinct lack of hot cat girls. I expect those numbers to be higher THIS year, people.

A few points for the con-goer:

1. Innuyasha is the WORST SHOW EVER. If I want to watch a bunch of angsty teens whine and moan about their feelings, I can always just pop down to Starbucks and listen to the emo kids talk about how their parents don't love them because they only got a BMW for their birthday. I liked Innuyasha the first time around when it was called "Fushigi Yugi".

3. You're not Japanese. Stop calling people "baka". It annoys the shit out of me.

4. Hot chicks. Keep up the slutty cosplaying! Seriously. Your sweet sweet jiggling breasts make standing in line at conventions with people who OBVIOUSLY cannot master the intricacies of their hotel's indoor plumbing almost worth it. But stop pretending that everyone's taking pictures of you based on your costume's merits. You and I both know it's because of your bouncing baby funbags.

5. Ugly/Fat chicks. STOP the slutty cosplaying! I'm sorry. This might be callous and mean (even for me), but I'm telling you this for your own good. <itunes:summary>
So...how's everyone doing? I don't even know where to start, I've been so freaking busy. Hope you all had a great Halloween/Thanksgiving and all that! I will, at some point, get back to regular postings and everything....there's just a lot on my plate.

I've been working on my comic, The Path, to the point that it has affected my sanity...but I think it's worth it. It's getting great reviews, was featured on Drunkduck.com, some webzine has nominated it for "Best new horror webcomic of 2006", and I'm awaiting word back from the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society about possible endorsement. Not to mention that this summer, I'll be at San Diego Comic Con, Otakon, and a few other small cons promoting it and selling the first collected volume and some other goodies. So...yeah. Most of my time has been tied up in that and work. I stopped sleeping months ago. Booth fees alone are the reason I've been working a lot of overtime.

Looks like I've missed a lot over here. Lots of new sets and new people and all sorts of craziness. Not to mention a ton of messages and more missed journal entries than I'll ever have the time to read. Well...maybe I'll give it a shot.

      <itunes:summary>
So, I got to work wednesday night, and it was like a shitstorm. The day guy did everything wrong that could possibly be done wrong...and I spent the entire night fixing his crap on top of trying to get my crap done and making sure that all of the jobs were covered. By the time 5am rolled around (my shift ends at 8am) I was so stressed I could barely see straight. When the bossman came in around 5:15, he was all yelling and "Why isn't this done? How come that's not done? what the fuck did you do all night?!" I then proceeded to tell him what I did all night...and what he could do with this job. When I was done, I think I scared him because he hid in his office until the end of my shift. I can't BELIEVE I moved out here for this shitty job. Every time I wake up, I half expect to be in my place back home, waiting for my buddy Issy to harass me about watching anime and going to Panda Express, or my friend Tom calling for one of our Toys R Us (we like to run around Toys R Us) then to Checkers outings. I can't believe how much I miss that stuff. I've been hardcore thinking about moving back home. I'm ridiculously tired of being lonely and depressed out here.

Some random and strange points of the last week:

I've discovered I can do damn near anything when inspired by the montage-inducing musical stylings of Stan Bush

the "hot chick" my roommate was hitting on all night was quite obviously a man

I got scouted by an mtv casting exec (I'm as confused as you)

pizza in west hollywood sucks. seriously. even dominoes is better

my friends out here always drag me to gay events/places to pose as their boyfriend because they're convinced they get hit on more if the other girls think they're straight...leaving me in a bar filled with lesbians who are used to straight guys that act like frat boys, so I get ostracized to the bar with my date, Heineken. And i wonder WHY I'm having a hard time meeting someone...

I finished the visor for my Snake Eyes costume for halloween. I'm pretty hardcore about halloween and spend a lot of time on my costumes. This year's Snake Eyes costume's gonna be better than the one I did two years ago. But it'll be wasted on the night. why? I'm going to be stuck in west hollywood(again...) with my roomie and her friends for halloween. I'm so freaking tempted to fly back home for halloween and go into NYC with my friends for GOOD halloween stuff to do.

Lastly, here's a random pic I drew for Cerah the other day...cuz I love her an' she always puts up with my immature crap.

The rest of the team is up on my Deviant Art site (http://jamesriot.deviantart.com), but here's my favorite chatacter, Bionic-1. I'm pretty happy with how this came out...especially as a preliminary design. What say the rest of you 80's children?

As usual, you might have to click it to see the whole thing. Journal always cuts off the edge a bit.

Bionics...ON, bitches!

      <itunes:summary>
So, here's my new thing: I'm dead-set on aquiring the rights to Bionic Six. Anyone else remember that cartoon? My love of Bionic Six rivaled my love of GI Joe and even Transformers. Plus, it had the best theme song EVAR. It had me wearing my watch backwards until I was 13. A few years ago, I wrote a comic based on Bionic Six. When I went home for a visit last month, I brought a TON of artwork and such back to CA with me and in that stuff was my Bionic Six studies. I want to do it and do something with it...but I don't want to pay anyone rights for the characters...I'd much rather own them myself. How will I afford such a thing? Well...I hear that whole male-prostitution thing makes decent money, and I'm a pretty good lay.

Last I checked, the company that originally owned B6 had gone belly-up, so I'm trying to find out where the rights are now and who has them. So if any of you hip internet cats and kittens hear anything...

I'm working way too much. I'm at work right now. I'm on day 3 of a 12 day overnight stretch. By day 6 I fully expect my brains to be jelly. So, for the two or three of you who read it, that's why I missed my update for The Path yesterday and will, most likely, miss it tomorrow.

Coloring Book Update: It's done. Well, all the artwork is and that fun stuff. I decided a week ago that I didn't like how it looked AT ALL, and decided to spend a few days just redrawing the whole damn thing. I never thought I'd be burned out on drawing nekkid ladies (especially ones so fine as you DN ladies), but I think I accomplished it. Between redoing the coloring book from scratch and other commissions, I cranked out roughly 120 naked lady drawings in 3 days. It may not sound like a lot...but it was. When I get home in the morning, I'll post a few pages for you guys to look at and tell me how bad they are. Now I'm just looking for affordable printing. Lulu is, apparently, still beta-testing their picture printing, and don't recommend ordering artbooks through them yet. That would have been so easy. Suggestions?

I'm totally gonna marry Alyak.

I'll be popping on here randomly through the night/early morning. Damned overnight shifts. Leave me some love. Or at least some like.
